The Dāmal Fellowship is an intensive nine-month fellowship that centers on Dalit women's perspectives to foster a deep critical understanding of caste, gender, sexuality, and class in order to generate new questions, knowledge, and imagination. ‘Dāmal’ refers to a historical system of legal punishments based on caste and gender, as outlined in the Muluki Ain 1854. Through the
Dāmal Fellowship, JFP focuses on the love, joy, lived experiences, capabilities, and aspirations of Dalit women. Furthermore, it seeks to engender new narratives on dignity, justice, equity, inclusive democracy, and sustainable futures, both within and beyond Nepal, through the prism of caste.
Inspired by the 18-month Just Futures Fellowship (JFP), which centered on the lived experiences of Madhesi Dalit women and insights from 20 sessions of the JFP faculty seminar series, the Dāmal Fellowship seeks to nurture intergenerational and interdisciplinary learning among fellows, leadership, administration, and JFP faculty.
